On Tuesday, November 7 the nation stops to watch all of the action, colour and fanfare that is the Emirates Melbourne Cup Day. The distance is 3,200 metres, the track is Flemington, and the trophy is solid 18ct gold. Watched by over 100,000 this event certainly creates lots of attention.
Did you know that the first ever Melbourne Cup race was held in 1861, the winner of this race won a gold watch. Later during the Second World War the winning owner received War Bonds. Times have definitely changed over the years.
This day is also about fashion, it is a day to show of a frock, and for the men to wear a suit. The word on the street is that this year is all about pastels. Don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour, and try to avoid black. Apparently simplicity and elegance are what the Melbourne cup is all about. – Kim Parnell, Editor
