Welcome to all on Harmony Day
The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre is inviting migrants in particular, and community members as well to an ‘Aussie Style Morning Tea’ to celebrate Harmony Day on Wednesday 21 March at 10am.
We will be celebrating the richness of our cultural diversity through the Harmony Day message of “Everyone belongs”.
Community Action for a Multicultural Society (CAMS) Coordinator, Robyn Edward said that the aim this year is to promote the theme of being a ‘Welcoming City’. “I consider that this theme really fits well with the ‘everyone belongs’ message that is the central focus of this year’s Harmony Day celebrations and activities.
“We usually celebrate this day with the multicultural community, however, this year I thought it would be a great idea to invite the general public along to come together and share, learn and appreciate our community’s diversity.
“I attended the recent Australia Day event here at the Hervey Bay Community Centre and noted how surprised the group were when a show of hands indicated how many attending were born overseas.
“Bringing our communities together through food, music and entertainment plays an important role in promoting our cultural diversity. It creates an opportunity to think, talk about and recognise how our differences and our similarities make Australia a great place to live.”
The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre is hoping to get a good roll up as this demonstrates the importance and commitment we all have towards cultural diversity. If local organisations and service clubs want to bring along a group then we would like to hear from them to ensure the catering can cope by calling 4194 3000.”
CAMS’s Racism. It Stops With Me! group members are looking for opportunities to address local schools on March 21. The Harmony Day theme for schools this year is Racism. No Way. “I consider that by opening young students’ mind to them embracing diversity tomorrow’s world will be a better place,” Robyn said.
