Dance for a Cause: Kindness Works Bush Dance Fundraiser

-Written by Joanne Lambden-

The whole community is invited to join in what we are describing as a ‘mega family bush dance’, featuring the incredible talents of the Smashing Bumpkins – a Brisbane-based band who have been playing gigs all over Qld for 20 years!  From pub rock to rockabilly and anywhere in between, the band get the crowd up and dancing with fun, simple instruction and great live music.

The Smashing Bumpkins will be hosted on the grounds of the Hervey Bay Baptist Church at 20 Nikenbah-Dundowran Rd, on Saturday, August 31 – starting at 5.30pm.  A sausage sizzle and soft drinks will be available to purchase on the night, so we are expecting people young and old to come and make this a really fun evening out in Hervey Bay, dancing the night away.

We would love to see 500+ people attending the event for a truly memorable night!!

And all the energy expended won’t be for nothing, as all proceeds go to assist and support families doing it tough as well as people living rough and experiencing homelessness in Hervey Bay.

Kindness Works is a not-for-profit organisation that was birthed in 2021 when a group of people from the Hervey Bay Baptist Church wondered how they could make a difference in the lives of families doing life tough.

This led to the formation of Kindness Works, offering a family mentoring program called Coach, and a Day Respite Centre. A weekly Monday evening meal for up to 70 people is a feature of the week at our new premises at 1 Peter Lane, Pialba,  as well as an open Lounge on Tuesday Morning, Thursday afternoon and 10-2.00pm Friday where people can come and relax off the streets and with a cuppa, find supplies such as a tent, warm blankets and a pillow, dry clothing or some hygiene products or a meal.

These programs have continued to grow as new volunteers are trained up and many individuals in the community of Hervey Bay have started donating goods as well as their time and talents. Kindness Works also works alongside other like-minded organisations such as the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, J & T for the Homeless and We Care 2.

As a not-for-profit, our volunteers contribute more than 6,000 hours per year to this work.  We have one part-time staff member that was partly funded through a grant from Council and then Carinity, otherwise, our biggest cost is the annual rent of our respite space, and that’s why we need to fundraise, to keep the centre open.
