Move over. There is a new band in town called ‘The Lowdown’, featuring our cover boy from our Dec/Jan edition, Andrew Copland. Let’s find out a little more about the musicians and the band. What a great way to start 2023.
Meet the musicians
Andrew – guitar, vocals
I’ve been playing music around Hervey Bay for the last several years, mostly doing solo stuff. I grew up playing music in school bands, then busking in Sydney and Brisbane as a uni student. After that, I just kept on playing, working in music shops, and gigging when I could. A few years ago, I got more serious about booking gigs and working as a musician, and haven’t stopped since. I’ve also had a lot of help from friends in the music scene here in the Bay.
Aaron – bass, vocals
I’ve been playing the guitar since primary school and play regular gigs as a solo musician. I’ve been in several bands over the years, including Insufficient Funds, Arcade Vandals and currently – Trainwrecks & The Lowdown. I’ve been playing music full-time for just over a year now, and I’m excited to continue this in 2023.
Paul – drums, vocals
I’ve been playing the drums for 28 years and teaching drums for over 17 years. I cut my teeth around the Melbourne originals and Jazz Cabaret scene playing venues such as The Tote, Cherry Bar, The Espy, Yah Yah’s, and the Eltham Jazz festival. I’ve been a full-time musician since 2013 and have now been playing with Dogwood Crossing since moving to Hervey Bay. I am super excited about adding The Lowdown to my musical calendar.
How did the band name come about?
The name is inspired by Boz Scaggs track ‘Lowdown’, which is a super funky tune – though not much like what we play at all!
What kind of music will the band be playing?
We will be playing a wide range of stuff, but mostly anything that is a danceable song with a beat you can tap your foot to and lyrics everyone can sing along with. Rock, country, blues, pop and all that good stuff!
How did you all meet, and what prompted you to start a new band?
We all knew each other from the music scene around the bay. The idea to form a band came about because we were all looking to do something a bit different. We all have different musical projects that we are involved in, and this was a good chance to try something different.
Will the band be available for private hire?
Yes, we have a few dates available for venues as well as weddings, corporate functions, and anywhere people need good music!
What are your goals for 2023?
Our main goal for this year is just to get out and gig as much as possible. We have gigs booked in the bay and Maryborough as well as Bundy, Gympie, Rainbow Beach and more, so we are keen to get in the van and get to play for as many people in as many places as possible.
What else would you like us to know?
Mainly just how grateful we are for the opportunity to play live music. There was a while there when all this stopped, and since live music has been back, crowds are into it, and we are stoked to be able to entertain people with good times and good tunes.
