About NAIDOC Week, 2-9 July 2017
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities but by all Australians from all walks of life.
This year’s theme is ‘Our Languages Matter’ in celebration of the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity; linking people to their land, culture, and spirituality through story and song. This year the Fraser Coast NAIDOC Committee has put together daily events across the region, giving people an opportunity to participate in a range of activities and support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the spirit of reconciliation.

NAIDOC originally stood for the ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.
