International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is celebrated throughout the world on March 8 each and every year. This day pays tribute to the early movement for women’s rights. We look back and see how far we have come and how much work there is still left to do.
Countries around the world may celebrate in different ways but the day is about women being supportive, educating each other, celebrating our achievements and raising awareness. It is also a great day to donate to a women’s group or charity, to volunteer or to tell your story.
Fast fact: Did you know that both China and Madagascar have an official holiday for women on this day. – Kim, Editor.
Zonta Club of Hervey Bay International Women’s Day Breakfast
This year’s Zonta Club of Hervey Bay International Women’s Day Breakfast features award-winning actress Dawn Albinger.
Ms Albinger will deliver a presentation entitled Future Conditional: Notes For Tomorrow and will reflect on the themes of despair, hope, and – this year’s International Women’s Day theme – Pressing for Progress.
Critics have variously described Ms Albinger’s acting work as “stunning”, “astonishing” and “bracingly comic”.
Zonta Club of Hervey Bay President, Robin Rayner, said “We are delighted to have such an articulate, passionate and experienced speaker at this year’s International Women’s Day event. I’m looking forward to an inspiring morning.”
Dawn Albinger has over 25 years’ experience in creating solo and ensemble performance. She co-founded performance group sacredCOW and the women in contemporary performance network Magdalena Australia, and was artistic director of the 2003 International Magdalena Australia Festival, TheatreWomen-Travelling.
Ms Albinger has taught drama, theatre, and performance at Griffith and Edith Cowan Universities, and gender studies at the Australian Catholic University. Her doctoral studies, undertaken at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, investigated the diva icon and its usefulness to feminist theatre praxis.
Dawn regularly facilitates women’s retreats for High Spirits and is co-proprietor of Archives Fine Books.
Breakfast guests will also be treated to the lovely harmonies of The Fabulous Women’s Choir.

Zonta Club of Maryborough International Women’s Day Luncheon
This year the theme for International Women’s Day is “Leave No Woman Behind”, highlighting the roles women play in risk reduction, rebuilding, rehabilitation and peace processes.
This year we are very fortunate to have Louise Kneeshaw as our guest speaker. Louise is from Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) and is currently the General Manager of the Maryborough Correctional Centre. She is in her 30th year of her career with QCS, joining as a prison officer in 1988.
She has worked across both the Custodial, Probation and Parole arms of operation as well as working in training, human resources and the executive services of QCS. Louise’s passion is building collaborative work teams and investing in the development and capacity within the team to achieve work performance goals and individual professional and personal aspirations.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts, Criminology and Criminal Justice with a Corrections Major from Griffith University and a Graduate Certificate in Social Science, Interprofessional Leadership from the University of Queensland.
Louise will be taking us on a journey through her experiences in a challenging career where she supports and encourages women in their roles.
Her stories will be shared over a delicious luncheon including dessert at the beautiful Brolga Theatre with tea coffee and a cash bar available. There will be raffles and a tombola with a variety of lovely prizes on offer. Tickets are available for purchase at the Brolga for $50.00.
